What Is Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT)?
Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) is a psychological approach developed by Professor Paul Gilbert. It integrates insights from cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), attachment theory, neuroscience, and evolutionary psychology.
CFT is especially helpful for people who struggle with shame, self-criticism, and feel emotionally stuck.
At the heart of CFT lies the understanding that we all have three emotional regulation systems:
Threat system – linked to fear, anxiety and self-criticism Drive system – linked to motivation, achievement and excitement Soothing system – linked to calmness, safety and connection
CFT works by helping you rebalance these systems, reducing stress and increasing your ability to feel calm, confident, and connected.
